Nothing evokes the tropics quite like luscious red papaya. With their sweet, mild flavour, and juicy, refreshing texture, Sunglow papayas are a luxurious but affordable everyday treat. Longer in shape than traditional papaws, Sunglow papayas have green/yellow skin and distinctive sunset red flesh, offering an exotic touch of the tropics at any time of year.
Buying, Ripening and Storing
Sunglow papayas are available all year but are particularly plentiful from September to November. Look for the Sunglow sticker to make sure you’re buying the best.
Check for ripeness by gently pressing near the stem end: Sunglow papayas are ripe when the flesh yields slightly and the skin is yellow. Ripen Sunglow papayas at room temperature then store, covered, in the refrigerator for several days. Sunglow papayas are easy to enjoy: just cut in half, scoop out the seeds and slice the succulent red flesh.
Eating and Enjoying
Sunglow papayas are naturally low in acidity – making them perfect for young children – so a squeeze of lime juice adds extra zing and they are delicious drizzled with passionfruit. Sunglow papayas take fruit salad to the next level. For a stunning presentation, slice a Sunglow papaya in half lengthways, remove the seeds and fill the cavity with diced fruit. Sunglow papayas are also great in smoothies, with yoghurt or ice-cream, on breakfast cereal and in savoury recipes.
Sunglow papayas are full of antioxidants, minerals and micronutrients. About one cup of Sunglow papaya provides twice the recommended daily intake of vitamin C and they are rich in vitamins E and A. Sunglow papayas are a good source of folate (great for expectant mothers) and fibre, naturally low in kilojoules and fat-free.
